The Mental Health Revolution - It’s Time To Act
At ArtSy, we don’t just create for the sake of it - we take inspired action toward a clear goal. In a world that has normalized massive workloads and made it acceptable for people to do jobs they don’t feel connected to, we’ve chosen to embody and advocate for a different path. Ours prioritizes productivity from a place of well-being and inspiration - so that we can communicate in ways that contribute to the achievement of unity and a Universal Basic Income (UBI).
UBI - a system where everyone receives a guaranteed income to cover basic needs - has the potential to reduce financial stress, improve mental health, and allow people to pursue work that aligns with their skills and passions, rather than being trapped in survival-mode jobs. Operating from a place of enjoyment and deep purpose may be where the highest value lies. This is something more people - and businesses - need to embrace, especially given the global mental health crisis. The normalised system isn’t working. It’s time for a change.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are many economic consequences linked to the rise in mental health conditions, such as: enormous productivity loss which significantly outstrips the direct costs of mental healthcare; difficulty maintaining relationships both in our professional and personal lives; and even early death which directly impacts the workforce. WHO reported a 25% increase in anxiety and depression worldwide, which was triggered by the pandemic. Despite one’s individual efforts to prevent or combat one’s deteriorating mental health, workplace stress, economic uncertainty, and social isolation continue to take a toll. According to a study published by the World Economic Forum and the Harvard School of Public Health, mental health disorders would cost the global economy US$6 trillion annually within the next 5 years if a significant change were not made.
Mental health is directly linked to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. The UN’s goal includes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. Mental health is a critical component of this as it is a cornerstone of overall well-being, yet it is currently underfunded and stigmatized. It’s important to note that all SDGs are linked to mental health, and overall good health and well-being. We all want to feel safe, in every sense of the word.
So, what can you do about it? After taking the Unity Poll:
Business Owners: Implement mental health programs and flexible work policies. Companies like Unilever offer mental health days and access to counseling services. They allow their employees to take time off to recharge without using their vacation days.
Employees: Practice self-care, support your colleagues, and advocate for mental health resources at work. Spend time in nature. You only have one life, so prioritize your health above all else (with a full understanding of what affects it).
A healthy mind is the foundation of a thriving society—let’s prioritize it. 💙
