All My People Gotta Eat - Can We Feed 8 Billion Sustainably?

There are currently ~733 million people facing hunger and acute food insecurity, particularly in regions affected by conflict, climate change, and economic instability. Let’s be honest, which region is not currently facing these specific challenges?

A study conducted by researchers at the Hague’s Wageningen Economic Research reported that global food demand is projected to increase by 35% to 56% between 2010 and 2050. But, by factoring in climate change, the ranges change to an increase of 30% to 62% due to the fact that climate change and water scarcity pose a great threat to agricultural productivity. This is directly linked to SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 13: Climate Action. The UN aims to end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture, as well as combat climate change. Achieving this requires innovative solutions and global collaboration.

So, what can we all do? After taking the Unity Poll:

  • Business Owners: Invest in sustainable food management, regenerative farming and plant-based alternatives. Companies like Beyond Meat are already transforming the food industry. Furthermore, call for a change in food practices and regulations that lead to approximately 10 million tonnes of food being wasted in South Africa, and a whopping 1.05 billion tons globally, each year.

  • Employees: Support local food systems and reduce food waste at home and work. One way to do this is to share your food with those who experience food insecurity.  In many countries, it is not hard to come by someone who is in need of a meal.

A future with Zero Hunger is within reach—let’s build it together. 🌾
